Speargun shooting line setup is a ten-minute job that decides how your gun shoots for the next hundred dives. The line is the only thing the shaft tows on every shot, so its material, the number of wraps you load, and the overhang past the muzzle all show up directly in range and accuracy. Here's how we rig it: choosing between mono, Dyneema and cable, deciding on one wrap or 1.5, setting overhang, and tying connections that hold when a good fish tests them.
What shooting line actually has to do
Shooting line has three jobs that pull in different directions. In flight it must add as little drag as possible, pay out cleanly from the wraps, and never snag. On the fish it becomes a fighting line: it takes shock loads, grinds against rock, and holds a panicking weight at an awkward angle. And every day it lives in salt, sun and a gun bag. The perfect line doesn't exist — every choice trades drag against toughness — which is why the answer changes with where you hunt.

Mono vs Dyneema vs coated cable: picking a material
Nylon monofilament is the reef default for a reason: cheap, stiff enough to resist tangling, and far more abrasion-resistant than braid when a fish holes up in rock. We rig 1.6–1.8 mm for general work, 2 mm where the terrain is brutal. Its weaknesses are memory — it remembers every kink — and bulk in the wraps.
Dyneema (Spectra) is thinner for the same strength, ties instead of crimps, and drags noticeably less, which is why long-range and blue-water setups favour it. The trade: it cuts more easily on sharp rock and coral, and its limpness demands cleaner line management. 1.5–1.9 mm braided Dyneema covers most guns.
Coated stainless cable has one honest use case: toothy fish that would shear anything softer. Everywhere else its kink-prone stiffness and crimped-only connections make it more trouble than protection.
One wrap or 1.5 wraps: range vs tangle risk
Wraps are stored range. With one full wrap, the shaft can travel roughly twice the gun's length before the line comes taut — simple, quick to reload, and the least likely to tangle. With 1.5 wraps you add half a gun-length of effective range, which is often exactly the margin on a wary Mediterranean fish. The cost is more line in the muzzle area, a slightly busier release, and less forgiveness for sloppy loading.
Our rule: hunt one wrap until you can't remember your last tangle, then earn the half wrap. And re-wrap the same way every time — consistency in the wrap path matters more than the count.
Setting shaft overhang correctly
Overhang is the slack between the line-release and the muzzle when the gun is loaded — the little loop that lets the shaft accelerate before it starts towing. Too little, and the line snatches the shaft mid-launch, robbing power and pulling the tail off line. Too much, and the loose loop invites tangles around the muzzle or your hand.
The working target: with the shaft loaded and the line seated in the release, you want a modest, consistent bow of slack — roughly a hand-span of free line on a typical gun, never a drum-tight straight run. If your line arrives taut with the shaft seated, lengthen the rig; if it droops past the muzzle tip, shorten it.
Knots, crimps and sleeves that hold
Connections fail at the worst moment by design — that's when the load peaks. For mono, use aluminium or copper crimps with a proper crimping tool, and leave a millimetre of tag past the sleeve so slip shows before it fails; flame-mushrooming the tag adds cheap insurance. For Dyneema, knots beat hardware: a triple-looped uni or a properly seated bowline with the tag stitched or whipped back holds close to line strength. Slide a short length of clear tubing over any connection that will slap the shaft — it quiets the rig and saves the knot from chafe.
Whatever you tie, test it violently on land. A connection that survives your full bodyweight bounce will probably survive a fish; one that slips on the bench was always going to slip.
Common shooting line mistakes we still see
The same five problems account for most line trouble on any boat: line rigged too long "to be safe" (it tangles instead), crimps squeezed with pliers instead of a crimper (they slip under shock), mono stored kinked under tension all summer (it shoots crooked), wraps loaded in a different pattern every dive (the release never behaves twice the same), and nicked line kept in service because it "still looks fine" (it isn't — retire line at the first deep scuff you can feel with a nail).
