To fit fin blades into footpockets correctly you need the answer to one question almost nobody writes down: which way does the curve face? Get that wrong and your expensive carbon blades fight you on every kick; get it right — and seat the blades fully — and the same fins suddenly feel a size more powerful. Here's the orientation rule, why the angle exists at all, how deep the blade must sit, when to screw versus glue, and the tricks that make stubborn pockets cooperate.
Which way does the curve face (the question everyone asks)
The rule: the blade curves downward — toward the sole side of the footpocket, away from your shin. Put the pocket on, sit down, point your foot: a correctly fitted blade continues the line of your shin in one smooth arc from knee to blade tip. Fitted backwards, you'll see an obvious kink at the ankle, like a hockey stick.
Two quick sanity checks before any screws go in. Standing with feet flat, the tips of correctly fitted blades angle down toward the floor in front of you. And in the water, gliding face-down, the tips ride slightly up behind you toward the surface. If either check disagrees, the blades are in upside down — it happens more often than anyone admits, especially with second-hand blades bought without pockets.
Why blade angle exists: your ankle's missing degrees
When you point your toes as hard as you can, your foot stops 20–30 degrees short of lining up with your shin — human ankles simply don't plantar-flex that far. Without correction, that shortfall would leave the blade ploughing water at an angle on every kick instead of pushing along your line of travel. The built-in angle or continuous curve of a freediving blade is exactly that correction: it makes up your ankle's missing degrees so that mid-kick, with your foot naturally pointed, the blade runs parallel to where you're going. That's the entire reason the curve must face the sole — flipped, it doubles the error instead of cancelling it.
Seating depth: why the blade must bottom out in the slot
The second silent power-thief is a blade that never went all the way in. Footpocket rails are designed to support the blade's stiff root section and to align the pocket's own angle with the blade's; a blade sitting a centimetre proud of full depth flexes at the wrong point, loses the pocket's angle contribution, and can work its way looser with every session. Push until the blade genuinely bottoms out against the end of the slot — you'll feel it stop moving in discrete final millimetres, not a vague squish — and confirm both sides sit at the same depth. Uneven seating twists the blade and shows up as a fin that "pulls" to one side.
Screws vs glue: when to use each
Screws (through the pocket's rail tabs into pre-drilled blade holes, or with supplied clips) are the swappable option: blades come out for travel, replacement or upgrading pockets. Use light thread-lock or a dab of silicone on the threads, tighten to snug — not gorilla — torque, and check them a few sessions in. Glue (flexible polyurethane adhesive, never rigid epoxy alone) is the permanent marriage: quieter, zero hardware to loosen, marginally better energy transfer — and a genuine fight to undo later. Our default: screws for your first season with any blade-pocket combination, glue only once you're certain the pairing is final. If your blades have no holes, resist the urge to drill carbon near its edges; clamp-style tabs or glue are the safer routes.
Install tricks: heat, soapy water and patience
Cold rubber grips like it's paid to. Warm the pockets first — twenty minutes in the sun or a bucket of hot (not boiling) tap water — and the rubber relaxes noticeably. Wet the rails with soapy water so the blade slides instead of stuttering. Work the blade in with steady pressure and small side-to-side rocking, pushing at the root rather than levering the tip, and pull the rail lips over the blade edge with your thumbs as it advances. If it jams a centimetre short, don't force the tip — back it out, re-soap, re-warm, repeat. The final seating should feel firm but never violent; violence means misalignment, and misalignment means a cracked rail or chipped blade edge.
Checking your work in the water
First session on refitted fins, spend two minutes on deliberate checks. Glide face-down and look back: tips riding slightly up, blades flexing in one smooth arc, no flutter. Kick hard for ten metres: no clicking (a click is a blade moving in its rails — reseat or tighten), no pull to either side (uneven seating), no dead spots in the stroke (blade not bottomed out, flexing at the root). Then forget about them — which is the whole point.
