Roller speargun setup intimidates more divers than it should. The gun looks complicated — bands running under the barrel, sheaves at the muzzle, talk of "pre-tension" — but the idea is one sentence: a roller keeps pushing the shaft for the whole length of the barrel instead of giving up halfway. Set up right, that means more power with less recoil from the same gun length. How a roller differs from a conventional gun
On a conventional gun, the bands are almost spent by the time the wishbone reaches the muzzle — the last third of the shaft's journey gets a weak push. On a roller, the bands wrap over sheaves (pulleys) at the muzzle and anchor under the barrel, so at rest the band is already stretched along the gun's belly. When you load, you stretch it further; when you fire, it keeps pulling usefully across the entire stroke. The results, per centimetre of gun: flatter power delivery, noticeably less recoil and muzzle flip (the pull stays aligned with the barrel longer), and quieter shots. The cost: more parts, more setup decisions, and a loading sequence that punishes improvisation.
Pre-tension: what it is and how to set it
Pre-tension is the stretch already in the band when the gun is unloaded — the roller's signature ingredient. Too little and you own a heavy conventional gun; too much and loading becomes a wrestling match while the barrel bows and accuracy leaks away. The working recipe for a first setup: with the band system installed and relaxed over the sheaves, most divers run a pre-tension around 1.3:1 to 1.6:1 — the under-barrel band section stretched to roughly 130–160% of its rest length before loading even begins. Start at the soft end. Choosing and matching roller bands
Rollers spread work across more rubber travel, so they thrive on thinner, longer bands than a conventional gun of the same power — 14–16 mm rubber is the typical roller range where a conventional gun would wear 16–19 mm. Softer rubber stretched further stores comparable energy with a gentler loading curve and less hand shock. Match the whole system to your shaft: a 6.5 mm shaft wants the moderate end, a 7 mm+ shaft can use more. If your gun runs two band stages or twin rollers, symmetry is law — identical lengths, identical rubber batch, identical pre-tension side to side, or the shaft leaves with a built-in swerve.
Loading technique and safety
Loading a roller is a sequence, not a shove. The band arrives at the wishbone already tense, so control matters from the first centimetre: brace the gun butt properly (chest pad or hip per your loading style), keep both hands on the wishbone, pull in one smooth build rather than jerks, and seat the wishbone into its shaft notch deliberately — confirm it by feel before your hands relax. Tuning accuracy: timing, wishbones and rail contact
Roller accuracy problems are almost always mechanical asymmetries, and they tune out in order. Timing: both sides of the band system must come taut together — unequal side lengths whip the shaft sideways; measure, don't eyeball. Wishbone seat: the wishbone must sit square in the shaft notch; a skewed seat is a diagonal push. Rail contact: the shaft should lie in the rail its whole length with the loaded band pressing it down evenly — a shaft that lifts off the rail near the handle flexes on release and prints vertical stringing. Test-fire against a soft target at a measured distance after every single change, one variable at a time, and keep the notebook honest. Roller maintenance: sheaves, line wear and storage
Rollers add exactly three maintenance items to a normal gun's list. Sheaves: rinse salt out after every trip and confirm they spin freely — a seized sheave saws through band or line in a session. The band path: inspect the rubber where it bears on the sheaves and the under-barrel anchor line (usually Dyneema) for chafe; these are the consumable zones. Storage tension: for any layoff longer than a week, de-rig or fully relax the band system — rubber stored stretched ages in fast-forward, and pre-tension is permanent stretch by definition.
