Ballasting a speargun is the tuning job nobody tells beginners about. A gun that dives at the muzzle, floats its tip skyward, or flips upward the instant you pull the trigger will never shoot where you aim — no matter how good the barrel is. The fix is grams of lead in the right place. Why balance changes where your shaft hits

In air, a rifle's weight sits in your shoulder and hands; in water, the gun floats (or sinks) around its own balance point, and your hand is just a pivot. If the muzzle is heavy, you spend the whole aim fighting a slow droop — and the instant your attention narrows onto the fish, the muzzle finishes its drop and the shot goes low. If the muzzle is buoyant, the same story plays high. And at the shot itself, recoil rotates the gun around your grip: how much and how fast depends almost entirely on mass distribution, which is exactly what ballast controls.

Horizontal or slightly nose-down: choosing your trim

The classic target is a gun that, held loosely at the grip underwater, sits level to very slightly nose-down, with no roll to either side. Level suits ambush hunting where the gun tracks fish across open water; a touch nose-down suits reef hunting, where most shots angle toward the bottom and a hint of negative at the tip settles the aim into that plane naturally. What you never want is positive buoyancy at the muzzle after loading — remember the shaft you just loaded is steel, and its weight forward is part of the equation. Trim the gun in its loaded state, because that's the only state that shoots.

Diagnosing muzzle flip and recoil problems

Muzzle flip is recoil converted into rotation: the bands push back along the shaft line, your grip resists below that line, and the muzzle kicks up before the shaft has fully left the track. You'll recognise it as a gun that consistently shoots high at close-to-mid range, hits harder low when you consciously grip tighter, and jumps visibly on land-drills. The three drivers are band power beyond the gun's mass, a light muzzle, and a high grip — and the honest fixes rank the same way: match power to the shaft and gun first (two moderate bands beat one monster), add mass at or near the muzzle second, and only then adjust technique (a straighter, relaxed arm resists rotation better than a death grip).

Adding ballast: lead, tubing and stock weights

Where the weight goes matters more than how much. At the muzzle: counteracts flip and steadies the aim — this is where anti-flip weights, short lengths of lead wire wound under the band slot, or a heavier muzzle accessory earn their place. Along the barrel: stainless rod or lead strip slid inside an enclosed track, or dense tubing sleeved over it, shifts overall buoyancy without changing handling character much. At the handle: rarely needed except to correct a nose-heavy wood gun or balance a rear-heavy reel. Work in small increments — 20–50 g steps — and always retest loaded. On wood guns, internal lead loading during a refit is the elegant solution; on alloy pipe guns, external solutions win because the sealed barrel is your buoyancy reserve.

Pro Tip Fix roll before pitch. If the gun rotates so the reel or line release ends up sideways, offset the ballast to counter the roll first — a gun that rolls will never hold a pitch trim honestly.

The pool test: trimming a gun step by step

Flat water, mask on, five steps. One: load the gun fully (bands on, shaft in, line wrapped) — test the configuration that shoots. Two: hold it at the grip, level, at arm's length, and let go gently; watch ten seconds. Note pitch (muzzle up or down) and roll. Three: tape trial weights (wheel-balancing lead strips are perfect) where the diagnosis says — muzzle for flip and float, barrel for overall buoyancy — and repeat until the gun sits level to slightly nose-down with zero roll. Four: swing the gun slowly through an aiming arc; it should track without fighting you in any direction. Five: convert the taped lead into a permanent installation of the same mass at the same stations, then confirm once more in open water — salt density will nudge everything slightly buoyant compared to the pool.

Band power vs ballast: finding the compromise

Every gram of lead you add is a gram you tow all day, and every band you add asks for more of it. The trap is chasing range with rubber: overpowering a light gun buys you flip, noise and a bruised sternum before it buys you fish. A moderately powered, well-trimmed gun outshoots an overpowered wild one at every real-world distance, and your wrists will second the motion by the end of the season.
