Speargun flopper tuning is the highest-return five minutes in spearfishing. The flopper — that hinged barb on your shaft — is the only thing holding a speared fish, and it fails quietly in two opposite ways: too stiff and it never opens, too loose and it flares in flight and ruins the shot. Here's how a flopper should behave, how to test yours by hand, and how to bend, file or retire it so the next fish you hit is a fish you land.
How a flopper is supposed to behave
In flight, water pressure holds the flopper flat against the shaft — closed, streamlined, adding nothing to drag. The instant the shaft punches through the far side of the fish, the flopper's job flips: it must swing open freely and lie across the exit hole like a toggle, so any pull on the line seats it harder instead of sliding the shaft back out. Two motions, both effortless: flat under light pressure, open under gravity alone.

The two failure modes: too stiff and too loose
Too stiff is the fish-loser. Corrosion in the hinge pin, a bent flopper base, or a burr on the slot means the flopper stays flat after pass-through. The shaft slides back out through the entry wound, and the "soft-fleshed fish that tore off" was really a barb that never deployed. If you've ever retrieved a bloodied shaft with a closed flopper, this was probably it.
Too loose is the shot-ruiner. A worn hinge or over-opened flopper flutters during flight, dragging the shaft tail and costing penetration and accuracy — you'll see it as unexplained low-right (or low-left) drift and shallow hits. A flopper that rattles audibly when you shake the shaft is telling you this story.
Testing flopper tension in your hands
No tools needed. Test one — the gravity drop: hold the shaft horizontal, flopper on top, lift the flopper vertical and let go. It should fall fully open under its own weight, without hesitation, from any starting angle. Test two — the brush close: stroke the open flopper flat with one finger. It should close with light, even resistance and sit truly flat on the shaft — no proud tail, no side wobble. Test three — the shake: with the flopper closed, shake the shaft; a healthy hinge is silent or near it, a loose one rattles like a key.
Run all three before every trip once the shaft has a season on it. Salt crust that passes a lazy glance fails the gravity drop instantly.
Tuning: bending, filing and when to replace
Sticky hinge: start with cleaning — hot fresh water, a drop of oil worked through the pin, open-close a hundred times. Most stiffness is salt, not steel. Still stiff: look for a burr on the flopper slot or pin ends and dress it with two or three strokes of a fine needle file — remove metal like it costs money, because a loose hinge can't be un-filed. Not sitting flat: a gently bent flopper base can be trued with pliers, padded with cloth and moved in small increments; bend, retest, repeat. Retire it when the pin hole has ovalled, when the flopper has visible cracks at the base, or after any impact that bent the barb itself — a re-straightened barb is a barb that breaks in a fish.
Single flopper vs double flopper shafts
A single flopper is the standard for a reason: one hinge to maintain, minimal drag, and it holds anything it passes through. Double floppers — one barb each side, or two in tandem — earn their keep on big, soft-fleshed fish where one toggle can tear through, and in blue water where the fish's first run tests everything. The costs are honest: more drag, more tuning (both barbs need the same tension, or the shaft flies crooked), and more places for salt to live. If you hunt typical Mediterranean and Atlantic reef fish, a well-tuned single beats a neglected double every time.
Field checks before every dive day
The routine takes under a minute per shaft, on the boat or at the shore: gravity-drop the flopper, brush it closed and check it sits flat, shake for rattle, run a fingernail down the shaft for bends near the slot, and confirm the shooting line's connection point hasn't chewed its hole.
