Speargun reel line is the part of your rig you only think about when a fish is taking it. Get the length, material and connections right and a reel turns a lost gun into a fair fight; get them wrong and you've bolted an expensive tangle dispenser to your barrel. How much reel line do you actually need
The honest formula is simple: at least twice your working depth, plus a margin for the run. Diving 15 m reefs? 40–50 m of line lets a fish run while you make the surface with line to spare. Working 25–30 m, you want 60–80 m. The reasoning is unglamorous: the dangerous moment is a strong fish taking line while you are still deep and out of breath — the spare line is what buys you a calm ascent instead of a decision between the gun and your lungs.
More line than that is not free: a fat spool adds drag and snag points, and the extra metres mostly add recovery time. Match the spool to the diving you actually do, not the trip you dream about.
Dyneema vs mono for reels: stretch, memory and visibility
Dyneema owns this job for most divers: for a given strength it is far thinner, so the same spool carries double the metres; it has no memory, so it lies flat instead of springing into coils; and its near-zero stretch telegraphs exactly what the fish is doing. Its sins — poor abrasion resistance and limpness — matter less on a reel, where the line runs mostly in open water.
Mono still has a case: it's cheap, it takes reef contact better, and its stretch cushions shock loads on light shafts. But its coil memory on a small spool is a genuine tangle factory, and capacity suffers. If you run mono, run it thicker, shorter, and re-spool it more often.

Diameter and breaking strain: matching line to your fish
Reel line should be the strong link, because it's the one you can't inspect mid-fight. A working ladder: 1.2–1.5 mm Dyneema (roughly 150–250 kg) covers Mediterranean reef fish with margin; step to 1.8–2 mm where dentex-class fish, current, or wreck terrain punish thin line; and below 1 mm lives race-spec line that cuts hands and dies on the first rock — leave it to competition setups.
Remember that knots, wear and shock all tax the label strength. A line that tests at 200 kg new might be a 120 kg system after a season of knots and sun — size for that number, not the packet.
Connecting reel line to shooting line and shaft
The chain runs: spool → reel line → connection → shooting line → shaft. Two rules keep it honest. First, the join must run free — a compact knot-to-loop connection (loop-to-loop or a small tied swivel) that passes cleanly without catching muzzle or line guides. Bulky hardware here is where mid-shot snags are born. Second, terminate the spool end with intent: tie off to the spool with a few metres of visual warning — many divers whip a marker or colour change into the last stretch — so an emptying spool never arrives as a surprise.
Keep the shooting line itself as the sacrificial zone: it takes the reef damage, and replacing it is cheap. The reel line behind it should retire on schedule, not on failure.
Spooling tension and avoiding wuzzles
A wuzzle — the loose overwrap that buries itself and jams under load — is almost always made at the surface, not by the fish. It happens when line is wound back slack after a shot and the next pull drags top wraps down through the loose ones. The prevention is mechanical, not talent: always re-spool under tension, pinching the line with two fingers as you wind, and lay it in even passes rather than one proud hump in the middle.
Every dozen dives, strip the whole spool in open water and rewind it properly. It takes two minutes and resets all the small sins that accumulate shot by shot.
Shore diving vs boat diving line strategies
From a boat, the reel is a convenience: the float line alternative is always available, help is close, and a spooled fish can be followed. Shorter line loads and simpler rigs make sense. From shore — the natural habitat of the reel gun — the calculus flips: you can't tow a float through surf and rock easily, you're often alone, and a lost gun is a long swim home. Rig longer line, inspect more often, and be more willing to let a big fish take the gun on a full spool and follow from the surface rather than get dragged in a breath-hold tug-of-war.
