Speargun rigging is the quiet half of accuracy. Two divers can shoot the same gun and land in very different places, because the shaft only does what the line, bands, ballast and hardware behind it allow. Why rigging and tuning decide more shots than the gun itself
A speargun is a simple machine: stored energy, a straight shaft, and a line to bring dinner back. Almost every miss that gets blamed on "a cheap gun" traces back to setup — a heavy shooting line dragging the shaft off course, a muzzle-heavy gun that dips as you squeeze, a flopper that never opened, or bands so overpowered the whole gun kicks sideways. None of those are fixed by spending more; all of them are fixed on a workbench in an afternoon.
We think about setup in three layers. The launch: bands or air, shaft, and the trigger releasing it cleanly. The flight: everything the shaft drags with it — shooting line, wraps, overhang. The recovery: flopper, reel or float line, and the knots between you and the fish. Tune them in that order, because a problem upstream masks everything below it.

Shooting line: material, wraps and shaft overhang
The shooting line is the one piece of rigging the shaft has to tow on every single shot, so it earns its place first. Three decisions matter: the material (nylon monofilament, Dyneema, or coated cable), how many wraps you load (one full wrap or 1.5), and how much line hangs past the muzzle before the shot — the overhang that decides whether the shaft flies free or gets snatched early.
Our defaults are boring and reliable: 1.6–1.8 mm mono for reef work where abrasion is the enemy, Dyneema where we want reach and low drag, and never cable unless teeth are involved. One wrap keeps things simple and tangle-free; 1.5 wraps buys real range but demands a cleaner release. Reel line: length, material and connection to the shaft
A reel changes what a lost battle costs you. Instead of a gun towed to the horizon, you have line on a spool and time to think. But a badly rigged reel is worse than none: too little line and a good fish spools you at depth; a poor connection and everything below the swivel is gone; sloppy spooling and the first real run ends in a bird's nest.

Flopper tuning: the five-minute fix that stops losing fish
The flopper is the cheapest part on the entire gun and the most common reason a speared fish swims away. Too stiff, and it never toggles open behind the fish — the shaft slides back out the way it went in. Too loose, and it flares during flight, costing accuracy and penetration. The correct behaviour is simple: closed flat by water pressure in flight, open the moment it clears the far side.

Ballast and trim: recoil, muzzle flip and aim
A speargun aims like a rifle but recoils like a boat — in water, every gram of imbalance shows up as movement during the shot. A muzzle-heavy gun droops as you track a fish and tires your wrist; a butt-heavy gun rides high; an overpowered, underweighted gun flips its muzzle skyward the instant the bands dump their energy, and the shaft leaves on a path you never aimed.

Pneumatic guns: keeping the power honest
Pneumatics are the Mediterranean workhorse: compact, quiet, powerful for their length — and only as good as the air behind the piston. Every o-ring in the gun is a consumable, oil is what keeps them alive, and pressure is a setting, not a bragging right. A pneumatic that has gone soft doesn't announce it; it just shoots a little shorter every month until you blame yourself.
The honest maintenance rhythm is simple: rinse religiously, service on a schedule instead of after a failure, and resist the urge to pump past the maker's pressure — more bar mostly buys harder loading and faster wear, not straighter shots. Beyond the gun: fins, footpockets and accessory setup
Two setup jobs live outside the gun but decide how many shots you get.
